MURAL ILLUSTRATION

Auckland, New Zealand
I was commissioned by Marriott Hotel to create a mural located on the internal wall of one of their restaurants. Its purpose is to be an invitation for people to appreciate our country’s wildlife. New Zealand‘s main wildlife population on land are birds and Auckland has several open sanctuaries where we can explore and learn about the country’s unique and diverse avian species. Inspired by Auckland's native forest and its thousands of species of plants, I developed an illustration as a public window for New Zealand wildlife. Featuring birds like Tui, Piwakawaka, Tieke, Fantail, Kōkako and Kereru. Also included are distinctive Pohutukawa, Harakeke and Manuka flowers.

This artwork is a celebration of the iconic landscape of West Auckland, The Waitakere Ranges. The work is situated on a large wall adjacent to the bike lane in New Lynn. The central focus is on the Kauri tree and the native flora it supports. Ferns, Kowhai, Pohutukawa, Flax and Waitakere Manuka flowers. The 22,400 kauri trees that make up the ranges are the life force of Auckland. Kauri are not only an integral part of Maori culture and faith, but a keystone species and an ecosystem engineer. They modify the soil under their canopy to create unique plant communities who depend entirely on them. Kauri Dieback has more than doubled in 5 years. People are the biggest cause of soil disturbance in the Waitākere Ranges and can transport the disease around the forest on their feet. The assemblage of plants in a New Zealand forest is unique, there is nothing else like it on earth. If we all take care of the Great Forest of Tiriwa, in return we will all flourish.

‘Wash Day’ is a short film directed by Kath Akuhata-Brown. Inspired by an ancient Māori story of the wind and the power of a child’s love. A simple tale about love, in particular the transformative love of a child for a parent. The film brings together rituals of daily life in a small Māori family binding them together with the land, water, air, and the constant spiritual presence of our gods and ancestors. Awarded Best Poster Award at Reale Film Festival 2022 and Best Short Film at NZIFF 2021.

This mural was commissioned by the school to reflect their commitment to the care of Manukau Harbour. The artwork is located on an exterior wall along the side of their swimming complex and looks out over the school grounds. Manukau Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in New Zealand and the nearest waterway to the School community. It supports a range of habitats for shellfish, fish, seabirds, seals, stingrays, whales, dolphins and more than 8 species of sharks frequent the area. Marine environments are under pressure from what happens in and on the water but also what happens on land. Our marine and land environments are connected, and depend on each other. The school community at Monte Cecilia, take their responsibility of Kaitiaki (guardians) very seriously. Students and whānau are involved in their aim to limit rubbish and recycle extensively for the protection of our whenua, native birds, plants and ocean life. We are connected to our whenua and it is our job to take care of it.
